Thanks, Godiva. My sister is totally devoted to Flylady, so I'm familiar with her philosophies. Getting enough of a handle to focus even on her constructive suggestions is still part of the challenge, but I'm working on it!

That's what I kept thinking all evening - he's there all by himself.

I e-mailed the link to Johnny since I'd been telling him about the old cemetery.

Hi, Conrad. I'm so sorry I didn't answer reply to your comment sooner. I've been very out of touch with my blog, and I'm just now trying to get back into it again.

Being "published" is a touchy subject with the introduction of the Internet. Technically, in my view and in the view of many poetry editors, "published" means the poem has been printed in a form that can be viewed by an audience--so a Web posting would count as being "published" or "printed" to many.

However, I suspect the club's standard is for having work accepted by an editor, whether in a print journal or an online journal. You could check out Poet's Market (F+W Publications), which is an annual directory of poetry publishers. I'm familiar with this book because I used to edit it. You can see if your library has it, or it's available someplace like Amazon.com or at your local bookstore. It not only has places where you can submit your work, but there's lots of nuts-and-bolts information about writing and submitting.

You can also look online for poetry markets. Even if a poetry journal is print-only, it probably has a website. Look for submission guidelines--these tell you what to do to submit work to that publication.

Another option is to hook up with your local or state poetry society. The National Federation of State Poetry Societies (<a href="http://www.nfsps.org" rel="nofollow">) has information about and links to state poetry societies.

Also, take a look at <a href="http://blog.writersdigest.com/poeticasides/" rel="nofollow">Poetic Asides</a>, a blog by the current editor of Poet's Market. You'll find a lot of information there as well.

Good luck!

I had the same reaction you had when I heard about the Sultana: How could anyone be subjected to as much as these guys were? My curiosity eventually resulted in a book, Surviving the Civil War, Prison and the Worst Maritime Disaster in History. I did not come across Conover in my research, but I did follow three soldiers through the long, phased ordeal that climaxed with the boat's sinking as well as their lives after.

Hi, Susan. I literally haven't been in touch with my own blog throughout December, so I'm just seeing your comment.

First, my sincere sympathy regarding the losses you've suffered this year. The magnitude of your tragedies is unfathomable to me, and I admire your ability to still be able to share some optimism about the future.

My thoughts and prayers are with you as well, especially as you face this year-end period, which is full of booby traps and quicksand with all of the looking back over the year just passed. Be gentle with yourself.

I hope 2009 is a year of balm and growing strength for you. And I would be honored if you'd continue to check back on my blog. I promise I'll be doing better with my posting in the year ahead.

All best,

Nancy

I hope you don't mind my writing. I found your blog when I searched for Gayla Peevey and they had your story about the hippo-trip (just for the record, I think the kid's voice is creepy myself). I read and enjoyed it and went to the most recent post. I hope your Mom is doing well, I know exactly what you meant about feeling as though you could see the days, etc. counting down. My father was diagnosed with lung cancer in Sept. 2007 and passed away in April of this year, eighteen days before his 81st birthday. Then on June 16 my 20-year-old son drowned and I have been experiencing the same surreal feeling you referred to since then. I've been more concerned about the world in general lately, but I know it will get better eventually. I'll be praying for you and your family to make it through these tough times and I hope you don't mind if I follow your blog for a while. Thanks!
